(NewJersey.CityRegions.Com, May 21, 2014 ) Edison, NJ - New Jersey -- Many people suffer from chronic pain stemming from injuries sustained working out, running and doing other physical activity. This discomfort has caused a good portion of these athletes to limit their training and some even have had to call it quits on their favorite activities for good.
Fortunately, there is hope for many of these people living in pain. This hope comes in the form of a foam roller, an inexpensive piece of equipment found in many gyms, yoga studios, physical therapy offices and sports equipment stores around the country.
According to Dean Narciso of The Columbus Dispatch, properly using a foam roller can not only relieve pain, but also prevent it from ever even happening.
Narciso noted that studies done on animals have revealed smaller amounts of white blood cells in damaged tissue treated with rollers, meaning that there is less damage to the area.
In order to reap the benefits of these muscle foam rollers, athletes are striving to attain a myofascial release. This increases blood flow to an area and is a great way to warmup before exercise or cool down after. Simply rolling an area will smooth out knots and strains, but most importantly it will help reduce lactic acid after a workout.
Lisa Johns, a director at OrthoNeuro, a sports medicine and rehabilitation center, explained the post-exercise process of rolling muscles to Narciso: "Afterward, they push out some of the waste product, for example, to prevent the common muscle soreness. You don't need a lot of training. You find a tender spot and then roll the area, along the length of the muscle — anywhere you could get some body weight on it and get some compression."
Completing this routine on a regular basis will not only have athletes feeling better, but should also keep them free of pain and injury. Lightly rolling before a workout or using more force after exercise for a myofascial release is a great habit to get into and just about everyone can do it.
Those interested in acquiring a massage foam roller can find one for as little as $35 via respected online vendors such as Elite Trend HQ and Amazon. There are many instructional videos and guides found online that will teach users how to properly attain a myofascial release and avoid getting injured by overusing or improperly rolling areas.
